Box three follows box two on a shelf, but its contents may not continue the same historical story. Storage references and chronological order serve different purposes.
Read the arrangement description
A finding aid may organise material by creator, document type, subject or another principle. Check the hierarchy above the folder entry before treating neighbouring boxes as consecutive episodes. Preserve the full reference needed to request the item.
Build chronology from dated evidence
If your question concerns sequence, use document dates and contextual evidence rather than box numbers alone. Keep uncertain or undated items visible. A folder containing later copies of earlier documents adds another reason not to equate storage position with creation date.
In a research note, give the location reference and your historical ordering as separate fields. You can then rearrange your argument without losing the route back to the archive. This distinction is especially useful when an apparently tidy shelf tempts you to believe the past arrived in the same order as the boxes.
